actions description

During the project the following actions will be implemented to meet the project objectives:

1. Preparatory actions, elaboration of management plans and/or of action plans

A detailed baseline survey for the nesting and foraging habitat parameters of the Lesser Kestrel population at the project area.

A detailed plan prescribing sustainable agro-pastoral practices and interventions to improve the Lesser Kestrel foraging habitat quality.

A grazing management plan for the wet meadows of Karla wetland, a primary foraging habitat for the species.

Technical documents with plans, drawings and technical descriptions of artificial Lesser Kestrel nests, and for the restoration – enhancement of existing nesting sites.

A comprehensive Regional Species Action Plan for the SPAs of Thessaly, with conservation priorities and quantifiable objectives and population Reference Values.

2. Concrete conservation actions

Establishment of artificial nests, and nest complexes, to increase nest site availability at optimal locations.

Management of foraging habitat, through cereal cultivation under a Lesser Kestrel friendly scheme, extensive grazing regime in pasturelands and improvement of structural diversity of agricultural habitats.

Establishment of a “Lesser Kestrel friendly” certification framework for local agricultural products to improve their market value.

Application of a sustainable grazing regime at the lake Karla wet meadow habitats, for the benefit of the Lesser Kestrel prey.

Establishment of a regional “Lesser Kestrel team”, for patrolling at the colony sites – informing building owners hosting species nests, to improve nesting site quality and nestling survival.

Formulation of an active Local Conservation Group of devoted volunteers, to contribute in the species management interventions and the project public awareness activities.

3. Monitoring of the impact of the project actions

The monitoring actions are foreseen to provide data on the impacts of the concrete actions to the species population and on the effectiveness of project action.

4. Public awareness and dissemination of results

A well focused dissemination campaign, for the species.

Establishment and operation of a permanent project exhibition at the Karla Info center.

Production of environmental education material for the species and presentations to local schools.

Production of project leaflets and other info material.

Development and regular update of the project web page.

Production of a 30 min documentary for the species.

Promotion of ecotourism focusing on the Lesser Kestrel conservation.

Production of a Good Practice Guide for Lesser Kestrel compatible farming practices.

5. Overall project operation and monitoring of the project progress

The effectiveness of the project actions will be enhanced through networking with other Lesser Kestrel LIFE projects in Europe, and through the efficient and adaptive coordination of the project.
